February 2019: Jim Papoulis Visits Prairieview School
In February 2019, renowned composer and producer Jim Papoulis visited Prairieview School for a week-long residency. During his time at the school, he worked with students in general music classes to create an original school anthem, "It's a Perfect Day to Be a Prairieview Panther." Fifth graders at PV created the lyrics, and with the help of Jim, an original melody and accompaniment was born. In Prairieview School, Jim worked with students to create an original song for their spring concert. In "Is It Love," students expressed their idea about the various meanings of love, and how it can bring us together. This project was made possible by the Prairieview PTO, in addition to fundraising efforts on Donors Choose.
February 2017: Saakumu Dance Troupe Visits D66 from Ghana, West Africa!
In summer of 2016, I visited Ghana, West Africa to study dance, percussion, and singing games with the Dagara Music Institute under the direction of Bernard Woma. After this incredible summer experience, I designed a unit in my curriculum that shares my knowledge of this music with my young students. The dance troupe that I studied with in Ghana was able to do a tour in the United States in 2017, and fundraising efforts began to bring them to our school. With the help of many donors from a Go Fund Me campaign, our students were able to experience drumming and dance workshops, along with a special performance. Four years later, this is still one of my students' favorite musical experiences of their lifetime.
